Chia seeds have a nutty, spicy flavour and can be sprinkled over cereal, meals, or grown as a microgreen or sprouts. It is also an excellent poultry forage. Chia is a warm season annual and requires frost-free growing conditions. Sow seed in warm temperate areas spring to early summer into a warm soil. In subtropical areas sow late summer to autumn. In tropical areas sow during the dry season. Harvest the ripe seedheads by bagging it and hanging it upside down to dry. Separate the seeds from the stems and winnow in a light breeze.
